Cloud forests / Debesų miškai

We’re awoken by lots of noise – people shouting, cars, loud music; its 9am on a Sunday, what on earth is going on? Its not even a hot and sunny day (we’re starting to think those don’t exist at 1200 meters above the sea). Turns out, all of this activity is due to a mountain bike race! These Canarians just don’t know how to enjoy a lazy day at home (outside of siesta hours :). And when it comes to hiking, they head of with the entire family – there’s the mom and pop, several children (some can hardly walk), then follow the grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and even a dog or two! We’ve met several groups of over ten people up on the peaks! And if they’re not hiking, they’re back at the picnic site grilling and feasting, no cold or cloudy weather seems to put them of. Our hiking route for today – a 4.5 hour walk around the mountain slopes names Los Organos, for they resemble the church organs. In a couple of hours we ascend to 1600 meters, from where we enjoy an excellent view of El Teide, the highest peak in Spain (3718 meters), and even receive some sunshine (most of the heavy clouds are bellow us at this point). A little further down we pass many clearings with supposedly nice views of the valley bellow, but the fresh clouds rising from the pine trees ensure the chances of a view are exactly zero. Its no surprise these forests are known as the cloud forests. Back at the base we treat ourselves to a serving of canned fish in tomato sauce that we brought especially from Lithuania :) This makes for an excellent dinner! Tomorrow is the end of our camping booking at this site, so its time to move elsewhere. Where to? Read tomorrow’s post to find out! ;)
