In the rain clouds / Lietaus debesyse

April 3, 2013 / by gerda

In the middle of the first night it started to rain! And it rained for many long hours, keeping us wide awake throughout the night with the constant bombardment of rain drops pounding the roof of our tent. We also wondered how well this tent will handle its first rain test. But it did a great job! Instead we were left disappointed with the sleeping bags, which advertised comfort temperature of +10C, but we found them to be mildly uncomfortable at around +15C (that’s according to the weather forecast, we don’t know how cold it was; this is at 1200 meters above sea level). Eventually the morning came and the rain subsided. After breakfast of porridge and strong tea, we put on our warmest set of clothes (it was still unpleasantly chilly and wet everywhere) and set off on a hike. Our chosen route, “Barranco Madre del Agua”, following the ancient water channel paths, seemed very suitable for a wet day’s hike. At the beginning, the hike was going great – we were impressed by the quality of the fresh air, unfamiliar vegetation and a pervasive cloud that seemed to be immersing everything, including us, when suddenly it started pouring rain! This was bad news – we had no rain gear, all of it was waiting for us back in the UK, its not like we set out to camp in Wales or anything… Within minutes we were completely soaked and, having completed the hike, made our way back to the campsite cafe, where we hoped to relax by the fireplace. To our angry amazement, we find the cafe closed! This was a tragedy! We sulked for a few minutes, but had to run back to our tent, our only remaining shelter option. We stuffed all the wet clothes into a sack and got into the sleeping bags, hoping the tent will continue staying firm and wondering what the tomorrow will bring…
