On the mountain ridge / Kalnų briaunomis

May 14, 2013 / by gerda

Slowly but with firm determination we traverse one village after another – El Palmar, Las Lagunetas, Las Portelas. Then its a really steep hike up the mountain, but about half an hour later we reap the rewards of fabulous views. From the top of the Cumbre del Charrizal pass we see it all – the sharp and naked mountain slopes of the Carrizales valley on one side and the fertile, deep green valley of El Palmar on the other. The pass is a border between the dry southwest and humid north. We somehow got lucky this time, camping in the “humid north” we’ve not seen any rain yet :) But those aren’t the only impressive sights from the top of the Cumbre del Charrizal pass – we see clearly the two sides of the Tenerife island and in the distance, seemingly floating somewhere between the sky and the ocean, are visible the two nearby islands, La Gomera and La Palma. A short walk around the corner of the mountain and the famous Masca village comes into sight, but we’ve already visited it with Kaja several weeks ago. The walk from the Masca village down the Masca gorge was one of our favorite hikes on Tenerife, but we’re not going there today. Instead, we walk further on on the edge of the mountain ridge dividing the two contrasting valleys and eventually reach the already familiar village of Teno Alto. From there, its about another hour to arrive back at the campsite. But this was all yesterday. Today we’re again having a lazy day, this time entertained by a dense overcast creeping into the valley from the sea. It slowly covers the villages and ascends up to the pass on the other side of the valley. An impressive performance! What’s more, we have some chorizo’s lined up for a grill later! Tomorrow we’re going to visit the town of Garachico – once the most prominent port on the island, till a volcano eruption in 1706 drowned two thirds of it in lava. And Zygis wants to watch the Formula 1 race, this time taking place in Spain! :)

Be to šiandien vėl kepsim dešreles! O rytoj važiuosim apžiūrėti Garachiko – kadaise didelio uosto, 18 a. pradžioj užlieto lavos. O Žygis labai nori pažiūrėti ten Formulės 1 rungtynes, šį kartą vykstančias Ispanijoje :)
